Short answer, if you are in a hurry: the right paper plate size depends on what goes on it. Use a 4 inch plate for sweets and prasad, 6 to 7 inch for nasta and snacks, 8 inch for breakfast and chaat, 10 inch for a regular lunch and 12 inch for a full Gujarati thali or buffet. Silver foil plates are for anything with gravy or oil; leaf print plates are for dry items, prasad and festival meals. If you are a caterer in Gujarat, stock at least three sizes, never just one.
Every week we get the same enquiry on WhatsApp: “10 inch ka rate batao.” When we ask what the plate is for, the answer is often a function with sweets, farsan, a full meal and ice cream — four different jobs that one size cannot do well. This guide is the paper plate size chart we walk our own customers through before they order, written from the factory floor in Dahod.
The size of a paper plate is measured across the full diameter, rim to rim, in inches. Here is the paper plate size chart we use with caterers, sweet shops and event organisers.
| Plate size | Typical use | Best finish | Who orders it most |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 inch | Sweets, prasad, one piece of mithai, pani puri | Silver foil or plain | Sweet shops, temples |
| 6 inch | Dhokla, khaman, samosa, snacks with chutney | Silver foil | Farsan shops, tea stalls |
| 7 inch | Nasta plate, pav bhaji side, cake slice | Silver foil | Caterers, birthday parties |
| 8 inch | Breakfast, chaat, poha, starters at a buffet | Silver foil or leaf print | Caterers, garba stalls |
| 10 inch | Regular lunch or dinner, dal-rice-sabzi-roti | Silver foil or leaf print | Mess, bhandara, canteens |
| 12 inch | Full thali, wedding buffet, heavy meal | Silver foil (deep rim) | Wedding caterers, event companies |
Keep this table handy. The rest of the guide explains why each size sits where it does, and how to work out quantities for a function.
Most buyers compare paper plates on rate first, but paper plate size decides more than the rate does. A plate that is too small overflows: gravy runs off the rim, guests take a second plate, and your plate count goes up by 30 to 40 percent. A plate that is too big for the item looks empty, wastes board and costs more per piece for no reason.
Getting the paper dish size right does three things, and the wrong paper plate size undoes all three:
Silver foil plates are the workhorse of Gujarat catering because the foil layer stops oil and gravy from soaking through. Our silver paper plate sizes run from 4 inch to 12 inch. Here is how each one earns its place.
The smallest size holds one or two pieces of mithai, a spoon of halwa or a prasad portion at a temple. Sweet shops use it for counter sales and parcel boxes. It is also the plate for pani puri and dahi puri stalls, where the foil keeps the paani from softening the base.
Dhokla, khaman, khandvi, samosa with chutney, a small serving of sev usal — this is 6 inch territory. Farsan shops and tea stalls buy this size in the highest volume because it matches a single snack portion.
The 7 inch plate is slightly larger than a snack plate and is the most common “nasta” size at birthday parties and office events. It holds a samosa, a sweet and a spoon of chutney without crowding.
Poha, upma, idli-sambar, chaat, pav bhaji — the 8 inch plate handles a proper breakfast and most buffet starters. For events that serve starters before the main meal, this is the second size to stock.
Dal, rice, one sabzi and two rotis fit comfortably on a 10 inch plate. Mess owners, canteens and bhandara organisers treat this as their default meal size. If you can stock only one meal size, it is this one.
A full Gujarati thali — two sabzis, dal or kadhi, rice, rotis, farsan and a sweet — needs a 12 inch plate with a deep rim. Wedding caterers use it for buffets where guests load up in one go. The larger diameter carries more weight in the centre, so it needs a stiffer board than the smaller sizes.
Leaf print plates come in 8, 10 and 12 inch. They look like a traditional patravali, which is why temples, bhandaras and garba organisers like them for prasad and festival food. The printed surface suits dry and semi-dry items: puri-shaak, khichdi, farsan, sweets.
Whatever paper plate size you pick, a simple rule we give customers: gravy goes on silver, dry goes on leaf print. If the menu has both, order silver for the meal and leaf print for prasad or snacks. For a full festival plan with quantities, read our disposable plates for Navratri 2026 guide.
Almost every plate order comes with a cup order, so match cup size to plate size in the same enquiry. Our tea paper cups run from 65 ml to 250 ml:
When you order paper plates for catering, count servings, not guests. One guest at a wedding will use a starter plate, a main plate and a dessert plate. Here is the formula we use with caterers.
Per 100 guests at a full-meal function:
| Item | Size | Quantity | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main meal plate | 12 inch (buffet) or 10 inch (served) | 120 | One per guest plus 20% buffer for refills and breakage |
| Starter / chaat plate | 8 inch | 100 to 150 | Many guests take two rounds of starters |
| Sweet / dessert plate | 4 inch | 120 | Ice cream and mithai counters use their own plates |
| Cups | 150 or 200 ml | 200 | Water, chaas and tea — about two per guest |
| Bowls | Foil bowl | 100 to 120 | Dal, kadhi, raita, curd |
Scale these up in multiples of 100 and keep the paper plate size the same across all counters. For a 500-guest wedding, that is about 600 main plates, 500 to 750 starter plates, 600 dessert plates and 1,000 cups. Always round up to full cartons; running short in the middle of a function costs far more than carrying one extra carton home.
Two plates can both be “10 inch” and behave completely differently. The difference is board GSM (the thickness and weight of the paperboard) and rim depth.
As the paper plate size goes up, the plate needs more of all three. A 12 inch plate made on thin board will fold in the middle the moment it is loaded with a full thali. When you compare quotes from two suppliers, compare the same size at the same GSM. Our paper plate wholesale rate guide explains how to compare two quotes line by line.
When all your sizes come from one factory, the board, foil and rim finish match across the whole order. For a served meal, 10 inch is the standard. For a buffet or a full Gujarati thali, use a 12 inch silver plate with a deep rim so gravy and multiple items fit without spilling.
A 6 inch plate suits a single snack like dhokla or samosa. A 7 inch plate is better for a nasta plate with two or three items, and 8 inch works for chaat, poha and buffet starters.
Paper plate size is measured across the full diameter from one outer rim to the other, in inches. A 10 inch plate is 10 inches wide edge to edge, including the rim.
Silver foil paper plates are commonly made in 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 inch sizes. Reva Disposable manufactures all six sizes in Dahod, Gujarat.
For a full-meal function, plan about 120 main plates, 100 to 150 starter plates, 120 dessert plates, 200 cups and 100 to 120 bowls per 100 guests. This includes a 20 percent buffer.
Leaf print paper dishes are best for dry and semi-dry food such as puri-shaak, khichdi, farsan and prasad. For gravy-heavy meals, a silver foil paper dish is the safer choice because the foil layer resists oil and moisture.
